CertainTeed Roofing Arc Flash Studies

CertainTeed Corporation engaged Maida Engineering to perform comprehensive electrical power audits and arc flash hazard analyses across eleven roofing manufacturing plants distributed throughout the United States. The engagement was driven by NFPA 70E compliance requirements and an internal safety initiative to reduce electrician exposure to arc flash incident energy at every switchboard, panelboard, and motor control center in the portfolio.

Maida's field engineers performed on-site data collection at each facility — documenting utility service characteristics, transformer ratings, overcurrent protective device types and settings, bus configurations, and conductor sizing throughout each distribution system. All eleven facilities were modeled in SKM Power Tools for Windows (PTW), and short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc flash analyses were performed to IEEE 1584-2018 methodology.

Deliverables for each plant included a complete one-line diagram, a coordination study with time-current curve overlays, an arc flash hazard analysis report with incident energy values at every bus, and NFPA 70E–compliant arc flash warning labels for field installation. Where incident energies exceeded safe working limits, Maida provided specific recommendations for protective device resetting or replacement to bring hazard levels within manageable PPE categories. The multi-site engagement was completed on schedule and provided CertainTeed with a unified, documented electrical baseline across its entire roofing manufacturing portfolio.
